Researchers are looking for localhosts for seismographs

Researchers are looking for homes for seismometers that will help them learn more about the land under the Kenai Peninsula.

Eva Golos is an assistant professor in the Department of Earth Sciences at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, where there are very few earthquakes. She studies earthquakes from afar, and her team is looking to place about 11 seismometers on the western Kenai Peninsula, between Homer and Kenai.

“Our goal is really to have these machines stay there for about a year to listen for earthquakes,” she said.

Golos said the information would tell them a lot about the land under the Kenai Peninsula. She said there’s a lot of sediment in the area, which means there tends to be really strong shaking during earthquakes compared to other spots.

“This can be useful for understanding where earthquakes occur and how they may affect communities in this region in the future,” she said. “So hopefully this will ultimately be helpful in mitigating the risks in the region.”

The information could be used in other areas as well, she said, since strong Alaskan earthquakes and tsunamis that could result could affect the entire Pacific Basin.

Golos is looking for interior spaces in the western Kenai Peninsula to store seismographs — ideally, she says, sheds or sheds. She said seismographs can still get good data indoors and that she plans to test imaging techniques.

“It’s also a great opportunity, I think, to get the community involved in science and pull the curtain down a bit and see what these tools look like and understand how they can contribute to knowledge about earthquakes as well,” she said.
