GeoNet estimates a 26 percent chance of another mag 5+ earthquake hitting Taupo within the next week

Since the earthquake, GeoNet has received a raft of damage reports from items falling off shelves to roof damage at a business in Taupo.

GeoNet believes that the 5.6-magnitude quake was caused by activity associated with magma and hydrothermal fluids within Taupo volcano.

“This activity could continue in the coming weeks or months, with varying rates or intensity,” he added.

Sherborne said that after six months of volcanic unrest it “looks like it’s going to last a little while”.

“It’s been relatively quiet over the past couple of months, and activity last night (Wednesday) kind of picked up a little bit.”

The latest quake is on the “higher end” of what GNS usually sees, Steve Sherburne, a volcanologist with GNS Science told Newshub Live at 8 p.m.

“We had a five notch in 2019 in the latter kind of the kind of disruptions we’re currently experiencing,” he said.

“It’s very unusual to get something of this size.”

GeoNet has estimated the potential for other major earthquakes in the region.

“There is an (unlikely) 26 percent chance that an earthquake of magnitude 5 or greater will occur within the next seven days in the Taupo region,” GeoNet said in a statement.

The probability of an earthquake measuring 4 to 4.9 on the Richter scale next week is 95 percent.

GeoNet also looked at the chances of more earthquakes over the next 30 days. The probability of one or more magnitude 5 earthquakes in December is estimated at 35 percent, and a 99 percent chance of one or more magnitude 4 to 4.9 earthquakes.
