Magnitude 4.1 earthquake hits Humboldt County

HUMBOLDT COUNTY – Residents in Humboldt County were hit by another jolt late Saturday morning when a 4.1-magnitude earthquake struck the area, according to the US Geological Survey.

The USGS website said the quake occurred at 11:33 a.m. with the epicenter five miles east of Headsville.

The epicenter was east of Rio del Rio and Fortuna, two cities that suffered the most damage in the 6.4-magnitude quake last Tuesday, which killed two people and injured at least 17.

There were no reports of major damage from the Saturday morning quake, but a total of 365 people in the area reported feeling the quake, according to the USGS website. The area has been experiencing aftershocks since the earthquake occurred on Tuesday morning just after 2:30 am

Residents of the region spent much of the past week retrieving their lives after the devastating earthquake struck early Tuesday, causing power outages for tens of thousands and blocking roads that required emergency repairs.

By Wednesday afternoon, power was restored to many homes, and the Christmas lights were back on around the trees on the community’s Main Street. However, most of the town’s 3,500 residents lack access to safe drinking water, according to local officials.

Twenty-six homes were deemed unsafe, causing an estimated 65 people to be displaced, most of whom were expected to stay with family and friends, said Rio Del City Manager Kyle Knope. Another 37 homes were damaged, and even those without physical cracks required extensive cleaning indoors, where floors were crowded with knocked-out shelves and broken dishware.

By Wednesday night, Pacific Gas & Electric announced that it had essentially restored electric power to all of the roughly 70,000 customers who experienced an outage caused by the quake.
