An earthquake measuring 4.7 on the Richter scale was recorded in the Flinders Ranges, South Australia.

Key points: A 4.7-magnitude earthquake has been recorded in the Flinders Ranges – Science Australia says it’s the largest quake recorded in the state in the past 10 years, and people felt the quake as far as Adelaide and Kangaroo Island.

The earthquake, which occurred east of Peterborough and Jamestown, was recorded at 9:53 am and had a depth of 7 km.

Geoscience Australia rates the earthquake from 4.8 on the Richter scale.

An aftershock measuring 2.6 on the Richter scale was recorded about an hour after the first quake.

Chief seismologist Hugh Glanville said the quake was felt as far as Adelaide, more than 250km away.

“It was felt widely, we have local reports, down towards Adelaide and even on Kangaroo Island,” said Mr Glanville.

“It’s very strong for this area, we’re expelling them at this magnitude, this way, but it’s the largest we’ve ever recorded within 100 kilometers of that location in the last 10 years, and reasonably strong shaking for 20 or 30 seconds.

“The biggest event in the last 10 years was in 2013, right near Ernabella on the border of South Australia, Northern Territory and that was with a magnitude of 5.4.”

Glanville said the aftershocks were most likely after an earthquake of this magnitude.

In 2014, there was a magnitude 4.7 earthquake in Yonta, near the site of today’s earthquake.

Yunta Truckstop manager Nathan told ABC Radio Adelaide that the quake sounded like an aftershock.

“Nothing too stressful,” he said, “but we felt it.”

“It was the most you could feel in the walls and the floor, that was it.

“Two diners jumped because I think it scared them off a little bit, which is understandable.”
