AVMA and Merck donate money for earthquake relief in Türkiye and Syria

The American Veterinary Medical Foundation (AVMF) and Merck Animal Health announced that the two companies are donating $50,000 each to support veterinarians and animals affected by earthquakes in Turkey and Syria in February 2023. The money will help support relief and recovery efforts as more than 50,000 people continue to die in the disaster.

“A disaster of this magnitude requires an international response, and we are very grateful to Merck Animal Health for joining us in providing support to our colleagues and the people of Turkey and Syria who have experienced such suffering,” said Jose Arce, DVM. Shelters are overcrowded, supplies and veterinary care are limited which has severely affected the veterinary communities’ capacities to care for, including livestock that is essential to the food supply. According to the statement, Dr. Murat Arslan, President of the Turkish Veterinary Association, revealed that 90% of the veterinary clinics in the area hit by two massive earthquakes on February 6, 2023, were destroyed (1).
