DNV launched JIP to advance the design process of offshore wind farms in seismic regions

DNV has initiated a new Joint Industrial Project (JIP) to increase certainty in the design process for earthquake-challenged wind farms.

The so-called ACE2 JIP is a follow-up project to the “Mitigation of Hurricane and Earthquake Challenges” (ACE) JIP.

DNV said that JIP will deeply investigate issues related to earthquakes that did not occur in the first project.

Special topics to be covered in ACE2 JIP are geotechnical aspects such as damping and liquefaction, crane installation vessels, seismic load analysis details, and specific Taiwanese and Japanese needs.

“The results will be used to update Recommended Practice DNV-RP-0585 Seismic Design of Wind Power Plants with the latest customer feedback and up-to-date knowledge,” DNV said.

“When we look at projections for installed offshore wind capacity worldwide, we expect Asia to overtake Europe in the 2030s and North America in the 2040s,” explains Kim Sandgaard-Mørk, Executive Vice President of Renewables Certification at DNV. “Especially in Asia and the United States, wind turbines and offshore substations must be designed to withstand challenging conditions such as earthquakes. This collaborative effort by the industry will increase the financial strength of future wind farms in earthquake zones.”

Companies joining DNV at the inaugural meeting include CDEE, Equinor, Jan de Null, Kajima, Obayashi, Ørsted, Penta-Ocean, Shell, Shimizu, Siemens Gamesa, Taisei, Van Oord and Vestas.

More participants are expected to join and the JIP is open to welcome latecomers on equal terms until the end of April, according to DNV.
