Australia lets Google and Facebook pay for news content

Australia Canberra (AP) The Australian Government announced Friday that it would give Google and Facebook three months to negotiate a fair pay for news media with Australian media companies.

The government has released a draft code of conduct that aims to succeed if other countries fail to get global digital giants to pay for siphoned news from commercial media companies.

Treasurer Josh Fridenberg said Google and Facebook will be the first digital platforms subject to the proposed law, but other platforms may follow.

Friedenberg said the story was about fairness for the Australian news media business, increased competition, increased consumer protection, and a sustainable media environment.

These changes are none other than the future of the Australian media environment.

The draft said an arbitrator will be appointed to make a binding decision if the US-based platform fails to agree to pricing with an Australian media company after three months.

Friedenberg said the draft would be open for consultation until August 28 and legislation would soon be introduced to parliament.

In addition to payments, the code also covers issues such as access to user data and the transparency of the algorithms used to rank and display media content.

Code violations can impose up to 10% of the platform’s annual turnover, or a fine of A$10 million ($7.2 million).

Fridenberg said the motivation was not to protect Australian companies from competition or disruption, but to ensure that they were paid fairly for the original content.

The conservative government is undergoing change after the pandemic poses an advertising revenue crisis for many Australian media companies.

Facebook and Google did not immediately respond to requests for comments.
