Lena Dunham reveals she fought the coronavirus
Lena Dunham revealed on Friday that she had battled the coronavirus in mid-March – and that she is still suffering overwhelming after-effects from the disease.
The 34-year-old creator and HBO’s Girls star gave a detailed account of her illness to an Instagram post titled “My Covid Story”.
It started with sore joints, Dunham wrote, and then the pain was accompanied by overwhelming fatigue. Then a fever of 102 years.
“Suddenly my body just revolted.
The New York native, who suffers from a host of chronic illnesses, said she experienced severe symptoms for about three weeks, which she spent in isolation. She did not say where she contracted COVID-19 or where she self-quarantined.
During her illness, she wrote that the nerves in my feet were burning and the muscles didn’t seem to be doing their job. My hands were numb. I couldn’t tolerate loud noises. I couldn’t sleep but I couldn’t wake up. I lost my sense of taste and smell.
I felt like I was a complex machine that had been unplugged and then my sons had been redirected to the wrong entrances.
Dunham said she did not need to be hospitalized as a doctor was treating her at home, noting that “this kind of practical attention is far too unusual a privilege in our broken healthcare system.
For three weeks, she said her days got mixed up like a rave gone bad.
After a month, she tested negative for the virus – but still has health issues that she “DID NOT have” before she caught COVID-19.
These included swollen hands and feet, a constant migraine, and debilitating fatigue.
Even as a chronically ill, I had never felt this way, she wrote.
She said she was compelled to tell her story after seeing people’s recklessness when it came to wearing masks, social distancing or taking other precautions to ward off illness.
