Norwood crane collapse prompts major emergency response – Boston 25 News

NORWOOD, Massachusetts – A large crane collapsed on an apartment complex in Norwood Friday afternoon, prompting a major emergency response.

Officers responded to a 911 call of an overturned crane in Eaton Village next to Nassau Gardens on Bahama Drive just after 12:30 p.m., and found a North Country roofing crane resting on the roof of the building, according to Norwood Fire Capt. Joe Mauhn. .

Maun noted that a crane was placing roofing materials on top of the building at the time of the collapse. There were no injuries among employees or residents of the building.

When asked about the incident, Maun said: “This is the first time in my career that I have seen this.” He added that it is expected to take a “long” time before the crane is lifted from the building.

A resident living in the complex said the impact of the collapse sounded like a “giant earthquake.”

Video from the scene showed the front driver's side and the entire back of the crane lifting off the ground.

The two apartment buildings that sustained roof damage have been sealed off with yellow tape and need to be inspected by safety officials before residents can return inside, Dawn reported.

The Occupational Safety and Health Administration has been notified.

The cause of the collapse is still under investigation.
