TAMPA, Fla. (WFLA) – After a 4.8 magnitude earthquake in New Jersey sent shock waves into the Northeast Corridor on Friday morning, the natural phenomenon has drawn the attention of residents across the United States.

According to the US Geological Survey, the earthquake occurred at 10:23 am near Lebanon, New Jersey, where the earthquake was felt by more than 42 million residents throughout New York, Connecticut, Pennsylvania, Maryland, and the border between Massachusetts and New Hampshire.

The US Geological Survey said the quake was the third largest earthquake recorded in the region in the past five decades and the strongest in New Jersey in more than 240 years.

Since New Jersey is not a place where one would expect to find seismic activity, it begs the question of how likely an earthquake would be to shake Florida.

While it is very rare for the Sunshine State to experience an earthquake, it is not entirely impossible.

“Earthquakes in Florida are extremely rare because there are no active fault zones or plate boundaries,” WFLA Max Defender 8 meteorologist Amanda Holley said. “The closest fault line to Florida runs through the Caribbean Sea, north of Puerto Rico and the Dominican Republic and south of Cuba toward Guatemala.”

“However, seismic activity is not impossible in Florida, but if an earthquake occurs near the state, especially on the peninsula, it is not expected to be very strong. According to the USGS, there are less than two expected cases of damaging earthquakes during 10,000 years ago in the Central Peninsula.

However, earthquakes have been recorded in Florida as far back as 1879.

In 1879, a 4.4 magnitude earthquake occurred on the border of Putnam and Marion counties in north-central Florida. This is the only earthquake recorded over the peninsula in the USGS database.

“There's a little corner in the Florida Panhandle on the Alabama-Florida border where a cluster of 17 earthquakes have been recorded since 1997,” Holley said.

Since 1992, four earthquakes have also been detected in the south-central Gulf of Mexico. The last and most prominent earthquake occurred in 2006 with a magnitude of 5.9 and was felt on the west coast of Florida.

Although there has not been a notable earthquake in nearly 18 years, a rare “weak” earthquake was reported in Florida five years ago.

In 2019, a 2.6 magnitude earthquake shook part of western Florida around 11:45 p.m., with its epicenter six miles east of Century, Florida, in Escambia County near the Alabama border.

According to previous reporting on WFLA.com, four small earthquakes were documented over two days near the Florida-Alabama border in 2019.
