Japan and Kazakhstan share lessons learned on earthquake risks with Central Asia and the Caucasus

ASTANA – In cooperation with the Kazakh Agency for International Development (KazAID), the Japan International Cooperation Agency hosted a seminar on earthquake risk reduction from April 16 to 19 in Almaty, the press center of the Kazakh Agency for International Development reported.

The symposium, co-organized by the Kazakh Research Institute of Building and Architecture and the Center for Emergency Situations and Disaster Risk Reduction, brought together emergency specialists from Armenia, Azerbaijan, Georgia, Kazakhstan, the Kyrgyz Republic, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan.

As one of the most seismically active countries in the world, Japan has shared its experience and technologies developed in the field of seismic safety to mitigate the effects of earthquakes with countries in Central Asia and the Caucasus.

Japanese experts provided a comprehensive analysis of modern seismic isolation techniques, and presented global standards and advanced methods used in Japan to create earthquake-resistant structures. They have provided examples of basic insulation design that serve as a model for the global construction industry.

During the symposium, Japan and Kazakhstan explored potential cooperation in the field of earthquake engineering. Experts from both countries reviewed the recent earthquakes in Almaty and Noto, exchanged experiences and lessons learned and studied their magnitude, causes, consequences and measures to rebuild and strengthen infrastructure after seismic shocks.

Discussing these cases is expected to help participants better understand seismic risks and develop joint strategies to prevent and manage similar situations in the future.
