Earthquake activity increases in Haiti during the month of May

Throughout May, Haiti saw a significant increase in seismic activity, with more than 60 earthquakes detected across the country.

The intensity of these tremors varied, with their strength ranging between 1.1 and 3.3 on the Richter scale, indicating a month of noticeable geological disturbances.

Regional monitoring highlights frequent shallow earthquakes

Data collected by seismic networks in Cuba, Jamaica and the Dominican Republic revealed that the majority of these tremors were mild, with 63 earthquakes recording a magnitude of three or less.

Furthermore, a large number of these earthquakes were shallow, occurring at a depth of 10 kilometers or less, which often leads to them being felt more clearly at the surface.

Potential tsunami hazards have been identified

The geographical distribution of earthquakes showed a worrying pattern, with 20 of them occurring at sea. It is worth noting that seven of these offshore earthquakes occurred along the northern Haiti fault line.

This location has raised concerns about the possibility of a tsunami, should seismic activity meet certain oceanographic and geological conditions.

The tremors were not evenly distributed throughout the country. The northwestern region recorded the highest number with 21 earthquakes, followed by the western region with 18. Nibs and southeastern provinces also saw significant activity, with 10 and seven earthquakes, respectively.
