Greece: Earthquake on the island of Crete and intense seismic activity

An earthquake occurred this morning, June 21, in a marine area southwest of Paleochora, Crete, Greece.

According to the revised solution by the Institute of Geodynamics of the National Observatory in Athens, the earthquake measured 4.3 on the Richter scale.

The focal depth of the seismic shock is estimated at 9.4 km.

It is worth noting that in the previous days, intense seismic activity was recorded on the island of Crete, with five earthquakes, four of which shared the same epicenter.

Three seismic tremors, ranging in intensity between 3 and 3.4 on the Richter scale, occurred in quick succession in the early morning hours of Wednesday, in a marine area south of the island of Crete.

According to the Institute of Geodynamics of the National Observatory in Athens, the first earthquake, which measured 3 on the Richter scale, was centered 45 kilometers southwest of Paleochora in Chania. The focal depth was recorded at 11.3 km.

This was quickly followed by a second earthquake measuring 3.4 on the Richter scale, at roughly the same location, 48 kilometers southwest of Paleochora, in Chania. The focal depth of this earthquake was 6.7 km.

The third earthquake, measuring 3 on the Richter scale, shared the same epicenter as the previous quake and had a focal depth of 12.9 km.

Later in the day, two more tremors were recorded.

The magnitude of one of them reached 2.1 on the Richter scale, and its center was 14 kilometers east-northeast of Zagros, with a focal depth of 29.9 kilometers.

As for the other tremor, which occurred in the early morning hours, its magnitude reached 2.3 on the Richter scale, and its epicenter was again 50 kilometers southwest of Paleochora. The focal depth of the earthquake was 14 km.
