A deaf man can miraculously hear again after being shaken by a massive earthquake

We often associate earthquakes with negative outcomes – whether that be the tragic loss of life or the destruction of communities.

However, it's not all bad, as a deaf man miraculously discovered that he can hear again after being shaken by a massive earthquake.

In August 2011, a 5.8-magnitude force shook the East Coast of the United States, most notably cracking the Washington Monument.

Robert Walderczak, a 75-year-old cancer patient at the time, became deaf after a fall in June of that year.

Somehow, Robert claimed that the earthquake miraculously restored his hearing.

While many on the East Coast were evacuating high-rise buildings as a result of the quake, Robert was thrilled to have his hearing restored.

Speaking to FOX, he said: “I said, ‘You know, my hearing is back. I can hear everything, people in the hallway. I couldn't ask for a better day.

“Why did it happen at that time, with my whole family there? There was God's touch there.”

Robert was in the hospital being visited by his daughter and three sons when the earthquake occurred.

“It was a blessing from God,” Robert told ABC News. “It was a miracle for me.”

He added: “It shook me hard – as soon as I got out of bed. But then it stopped. My son spoke to me, and I could hear his voice.”

Tests confirmed that Robert's hearing has improved significantly, as doctors try to find out the reason for this medical “miracle.”

“He had conductive hearing loss, caused by fluid in his middle ear, as well as hearing loss due to nerve damage,” said Dr. Ross Fletcher, chief medical officer at the VA hospital at the time.

“It is possible that a combination of the medication he was taking and the earthquake event itself resulted in him losing fluids and regaining his hearing.”

Dr. Jennifer Smolin also weighed in on the discussion, noting that the shaking itself may not have been enough to remove the fluid from Robert's inner ear.

She added: “But if someone feels startled and yawns or screams, that is sometimes enough to remove some fluid from the eardrum.”

Although the restoration of his hearing was great news, Robert adapted to his hearing loss with the help of a special microphone and a lesson in lip-reading.

“The devices helped, but by the time I connected them all, everyone had left and I was talking to myself,” he told ABC News.
