4.5 magnitude earthquake hits parts of Iron and Washington counties

BRIAN'S HEAD, Utah, July 29, 2024 (Gebhardt Daily) – A magnitude 4.5 earthquake centered near Brian's Head was felt and reported by people from Beaver to Mesquite, Nev., Sunday night, with most reports coming in to the U.S. Geological Survey in the Cedar City, La Verkin and St. George areas.

The University of Utah reported that the quake struck at 11:29 p.m. and was 12.2 miles below the surface. The quake was 19 miles from Cedar City and 14 miles from Brian Head, according to the U.S. Geological Survey and the University of Utah.

The earthquake was initially reported as a magnitude 4.4, but was later updated to a magnitude 4.5. At 4.5, an earthquake is considered “moderate,” a category in which buildings can sustain moderate damage, depending on construction. Most earthquakes in Utah fall into the lower category of “minor.”

By 1 a.m., 1,808 area residents had reported feeling the quake on the U.S. Geological Survey's form asking people to report it.

“Just remember that these earthquakes are temporary and usually not bad enough to cause significant damage,” advised one earthquake veteran.
