5.2 magnitude earthquake hits Southern California

A 5.2-magnitude earthquake struck near Bakersfield, California, Tuesday evening, sending tremors throughout Southern California, officials said.

The U.S. Geological Survey said the quake struck at about 9 p.m. Pacific time at a depth of six miles, about 19 miles south of Bakersfield and 89 miles north of downtown Los Angeles. The agency said the number of people affected by the quake was small or nonexistent.

The Los Angeles Fire Department said last night it was in “earthquake mode,” prompting all neighborhood fire stations to clear their areas.

“No major damage or injuries to infrastructure within the city of Los Angeles were observed,” the fire department said, according to KTLA-TV.

The earthquake was felt in areas surrounding Southern California, including Camarillo, Hollywood, North Hollywood, Pasadena, Simi Santa Clarita, Santa Monica, Valley, Ventura, and Woodland Hills.

The California Institute of Technology's Seismological Laboratory said the quake was followed by 31 aftershocks measuring 4.5 magnitude or less.

Seismologist Lucy Jones told CBS News that while the aftershocks were typical for such an earthquake, they came from an area that hadn't seen an earthquake in more than 60 years. A 7.5-magnitude quake struck the area in 1952.

“This doesn't appear to be the same fault that occurred in the earthquake,” Jones said. “It doesn't appear to be the same fault that occurred in the earthquake.” [recent] “The earthquake is associated with any known fault.”
