Magnitude 5.7 earthquake strikes off western Indonesia near Sumatra

JAKARTA, Aug. 20 (Xinhua) — A 5.7-magnitude earthquake struck off the coast of North Sumatra province in western Indonesia on Sunday, the country's meteorology and geophysics agency said.

The agency said the tremors occurred at 04:37 a.m. Jakarta time (2137 GMT Saturday) and were centered 17 kilometers southwest of North Tapanuli (Tapanuli Utara) province at a depth of 131 kilometers underground.

The agency said the earthquake's intensity was recorded at III MMI (Modified Mercalli Intensity) in the Central Tapanuli (Tapanuli Tengah) district and Gunungsitoli town.

Indonesia, an archipelagic nation made up of thousands of islands, is frequently hit by earthquakes due to its location on a seismically vulnerable zone called the Pacific Ring of Fire.

A 5.6-magnitude earthquake on Nov. 21 killed at least 331 people and injured nearly 600 in the city of Cianjur, West Java. It was the deadliest in Indonesia since the 2018 earthquake and tsunami in Sulawesi that killed about 4,340 people.
