North Carolina earthquake: University of North Carolina geologists are surveying damage near the epicenter of a 5.1 magnitude earthquake in Sparta

Chapel Hill, North Carolina (WTVD) – There was fear and panic among some North Carolina residents after experiencing a magnitude 5.1 earthquake for the first time.

But for researchers like Kevin Stewart, Associate Professor of Geosciences at United Nations University, it was pretty cool.

“It’s an extraordinary geological event and so I was a little excited,” Stewart told ABC11.

Earthquakes of this strength are rare in our country. Stewart felt it from his home at Raleigh on Sunday morning.

By noon that day, he had traveled 145 miles west to Sparta. He and other scientists surveyed cracked roads and buildings near the epicenter.

“Ultimately we’d like to have an idea of ​​which parts of the Earth were shaking so badly,” said Steward. “Which of them moved and if that could give us some insight then into the possible origin of the earthquake.”

Geologists said this was a reverse earthquake – a violent release of pressure, after building up extra slowly, then erupting.

The earthquake separated the ground and created a new rift for the underground plane.

Monday marked the first day of school at UNC. Stewart said Sunday’s earthquake was a hot topic of discussion for students studying geology.

“We were approaching the end of the semester and I asked them if they wanted to hear about the earthquake in our next class and go out of the curriculum and they said, ‘Yes,” said Stewart.

The last earthquake of a magnitude of five, similar to this one, struck our state in 1916. The United States Geological Survey recorded that earthquake with a magnitude of 5.2.

“It’s unlikely that we’ll have any of this size anytime soon,” said Stewart. “But I could be wrong.”

Geologists say the interesting thing about Sunday’s earthquake is the presence of smaller tremors before the big event.

Experts recorded several small aftershocks and there is potential for more in the coming days.
