Oct. 17: “Great ShakeOut” drill helps Bruins prepare for earthquakes

UCLA students, faculty and staff are being asked to “drop, cover and wait” at 10:17 a.m. on Thursday, October 17, during the major aftershock. Held annually on the third Thursday in October, the event is the world's largest virtual earthquake drill. During this one-minute event, participants practice reacting safely and calmly to an emergency earthquake scenario, allowing them to be better prepared to respond in the event of a major earthquake – potentially preventing a disaster. The Great ShakeOut program also allows testing of UCLA's emergency communications systems.

“Through this exercise, we can enhance our preparedness and response capabilities,” said Lisa Martin, director of the UCLA Office of Emergency Management, or OEM. “These exercises give participants an opportunity to practice their response and develop a clear plan of action to stay calm and alert when faced with a real-world situation.”

To prepare for the earthquake drill scheduled for October 17, download MyShake, a global earthquake early warning app, via the Apple Store or Google Play. Bruins are also encouraged to check their BruinALERT contact information and/or opt-in to receive text alerts by following the instructions on the BruinALERT website. Finally, the Bruins should download the Bruins Safe app, also available in the Apple Store and Google Play. A link to the training (in English and Spanish) is posted on the UCLA Great ShakeOut website.

October is Bruin Earthquake Awareness Month, a time when OEM employees will participate in awareness efforts and share important safety information related to earthquake preparedness and safety.
