Thousands of Missouri residents prepare to drop, cover and hold up in earthquake drills

Missouri will be one of fourteen US states participating in the Great Central United States Earthquake Drill on Thursday, October 17. At 10:17 a.m., participants will use the “drop, cover and wait” technique.

Missouri is home to a large and active New Madrid earthquake zone, said state seismic program director Jeff Briggs.

“So, experts say that when you have an active seismic zone, and there have been large earthquakes in the past, it's only a matter of time before there are more large earthquakes,” Briggs said. “When that happens, it will be the worst natural disaster this state has ever seen.”

The state of Missouri conducts training exercises every year to make residents aware of the danger.

“So, it's really important to prepare for it, understand it, and know what to do when the shaking starts,” he explained. “And that's what this ShakeOut exercise is all about. We would like everyone to participate once a year and do a simple one-minute exercise on what you do to protect yourself and your family when the shaking starts.

In 1811 and 1812, the New Madrid earthquake zone produced some of the largest earthquakes in United States history.

“What will hit you is falling debris,” he told Missourinet. “If there are heavy objects around you or part of the building that might fall, the fall of those heavy objects is what causes injuries and deaths. So, what we want to do is get down to the ground as soon as the shaking starts, before the shaking knocks you down, and protect yourself.”

Schools, businesses, community organizations or other groups can register to participate in the trainings as well as families and individuals.
