Cebu: 3.7 magnitude earthquake hits Minglanilla

CEBU CITY, Philippines – A shallow 3.7 magnitude earthquake shook Cebu City at dawn on Wednesday, October 30.

The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) recorded the epicenter six kilometers northwest of Minglanilla in southern Cebu, which occurred at 1:13 a.m.

Initially, Phivolcs measured the quake at 2.7 on the Richter scale, but after a few hours, they revised their earthquake bulletin and raised it to 3.7. They also classified it as a tectonic earthquake.

Tremors were also felt in other parts of Cebu, including the capital, Cebu City, located 19 kilometers north of Minglanilla.

No damages have been reported as of this posting.

While the strength of the quake was relatively weak on the Richter scale, Minglanilla residents reported on social media that ground motion appeared strong.

This can be attributed to the fact that Wednesday's earthquake was only nine kilometers deep.

Earthquakes between 0 and 70 kilometers deep are considered shallow earthquakes, according to the United States Geological Survey (USGS).
