A 4.7 magnitude earthquake hits Kandahar and surrounding areas

The National Disaster Management Authority reported on Saturday, December 28 that a 4.7 magnitude earthquake struck Kandahar Province and surrounding areas last night at approximately 3:09 am.

The authority stated that the epicenter of the earthquake was located 41 kilometers northeast of the Spin Boldak area, and at a depth of 10 kilometers below the surface of the earth.

The Kandahar Province Disaster Management Authority stated that there were no casualties or major damage in the city center or surrounding areas.

However, the authority indicated that investigations are still ongoing in the areas of Spin Boldak, Shorpak and Maiwand, and there is no accurate information available about the extent of potential damage in these areas. The final report will be released once the assessments are completed.

Meanwhile, the US Geological Survey (USGS) also confirmed that a 4.7 magnitude earthquake struck Kandahar last night.

In addition to Kandahar, some areas across the Durand Line were also affected by the earthquake.

Recently, different regions of Afghanistan have witnessed several earthquakes. Last year, a 6.2-magnitude earthquake struck the city of Herat, with its epicenter in the Zinda Jan district of Herat Province, resulting in hundreds of casualties.

Likewise, earthquakes in Paktika and Paktia provinces last year caused significant loss of life and property.

Although no major casualties have been reported in Kandahar City and its immediate surrounding areas, the situation is still under investigation in the most affected areas. The potential for damage, especially in rural areas, is still being assessed.
