Ethiopia: An earthquake hits the Awash Final region again

TORONTO – Another earthquake has struck the Awash Fental area in the Afar region of Ethiopia. It was a recurring event that started Sunday afternoon and continued into the morning.

There have been no reports of injuries so far, although property damage has not been estimated.

Its magnitude reached 5.1 on the Richter scale. Before this earthquake, there were two other earthquakes earlier this week.

The earthquake is also causing faulting in some areas near Vintal. Mesfin Arega, a resident of the town of Metehara, told DW Amharic: “In the Samur Afar area, which is located at the back of Mount Vental, there is an imbalance. The cracks caused by the fault and the gorge are widening.”

Abdo Muhammad, a resident of the Awash 7 area, said that residents are worried about the earthquake continuing in the area.

“Yesterday and today there was a strong earthquake. Nowadays people are evacuating their places of residence. Especially in Amipara, Melkaorur, Sabor and Doyo, the asphalt roads are suffering from cracks and fissures. People are very worried. Due to the nature of the high vibrations, people are sleeping outside.” .

Residents demand that the government pay due attention to development, conduct study and take precautionary measures.

Professor Atalay Ayele – a researcher in the Department of Geophysics, Space Sciences and Astronomy at Addis Ababa University – said that the shock caused by the earthquake was felt in the capital, Addis Ababa, which is more than 216 kilometers away from the site.

Voice of America Amharic Radio quoted the Awash Vital Office of Agriculture and Disaster Prevention as saying that it had begun relocating residents from the area for safety.

There were frequent earthquakes in the area in September and October this year. Its strength on the Richter scale was lower compared to that observed on Sunday.
