Thousands evacuate Santorini after earthquakes shake the Greek island
Thousands of population escape from Santorini after registering hundreds of earthquakes near the Greek island during the past 48 hours.
About 9,000 people have left the island since Sunday, when it is scheduled to leave the additional emergency flights on Tuesday.
More than 300 earthquakes have been registered in the past two days near the island, and some experts say the tremors may last for weeks. The authorities closed schools and warned of large internal gatherings, but Prime Minister Kiriacos Mitsotakis urged calm.
Santorini is a famous tourist destination, but most of those who leave are locals, as February is outside the tourist peak season.
Dozens of tremors have been recorded in the Aegean Sea, northeast of Santorini so far on Tuesday, with a large earthquake with a size of 5 in the afternoon.
Several days of continuous seismic activity have pushed some residents to sleep in their cars – afraid of spending the night in their homes in the case of walls or ceilings.
No significant damage has been reported on the island yet, but emergency measures are taken as a preventive measure.
Hundreds of people are in a port in the early hours of Tuesday morning on the ferry leaving to the mainland.
“Everything is closed. No one is working now. I emptied the entire island,” a 18 -year -old local population told Reuters before riding the ship.
Local media reports about about 6000 people have left the island in the phrase on Sunday, and between 2,500 to 2700 passengers from Santorini to Athens will be transferred on Monday and Tuesday, according to Aegean Airlines.
The carrier said that it added nine emergency flights to its schedule after a request from the Ministry of Climate Crisis and Civil Protection.
In recent days, an estimated 9,000 people in total have escaped from Santorini – a small island with a population of only 15,500.
The island welcomes millions of tourists annually, but reservations at this time of the year are minimal, so the local population and workers make up the majority of the people who were evacuated.
Kostas Sakavaras, a tourist guide who lived in Santorini for 18 years, left the island with his wife and children on Monday.
“We have considered it better to come to the mainland as a preventive measure,” BBC News told BBC News.
“Not anything fell, or anything like that,” he said, adding that the worst part was the sound. “This is the most frightening part of it,” said Mr. Sakafaras, who is planning to return home as soon as schools reopen.
Schools are scheduled to remain closed on the island until Friday. The authorities also warned people against avoiding certain areas of the island and emptying their swimming pools.
The mayor of Santorini, Nikos Zorzos, said the island is ready for seismic activity that “may last for many weeks.” He said on Tuesday that the island should deal with it “with patience and calm.”
He added that the plans were present to build shelters and provide food for the residents in the event of greater tremors.
On Tuesday morning, representatives of the government, the armed forces and emergency services met in the Ministry of Climate and Civil Protection Crisis to discuss the situation.
The Prime Minister will chair a similar meeting on Wednesday.
Prime Minister Mitsotakis said on Monday that Greece was working to manage a “very extensive geological phenomenon.”
Seismologists consider the recent tremors simple, but preventive measures have been placed in the event of a larger earthquake.
Emergency services have warned the population against leaving the Ammoudi, Armeni and Old Fira regions due to the landslides.
The regional firefighting department was placed in the south of Free Aegean on public alert teams and rescue teams were sent, with the monitoring of the teams from the large yellow medical tents on the island.
Anxiety is still high on hundreds of earthquakes in the Greek Cyclades Islands, where scientists analyze data quickly to better understand the phenomenon.
Most of the most powerful earthquakes arose from an area around a small island of Aidros, northeast of Santorini.
With the seismic activity remains intense in the region, scientists are alert not only SCORANINA, but also for matches, nasal and iOS.
In the event of a larger earthquake, the main issue is the resistance of buildings, especially in Santorini, due to soil privacy.
Santorini on what is known as the Hellenic Sagittarius – a series of islands created by volcanoes – but the last large eruption was in the fifties.
The Greek authorities said that the recent tremors were linked to tectonic platelet movements instead of volcanic activity.
Scientists currently cannot predict the exact time, size or location of earthquakes.
But there are areas in the world where governments are likely to speak on the preparation.
Earthquakes occur as a result of tectonic dishes either in the past, below or together. This stress that was built and then released as earthquakes along or near the borders of these paintings – known as rift lines. Santorini and the Greek islands near such a line.
Since scientists cannot predict such events, the best way to prevent damage or loss of lives is for salads to reduce the exposure of the population. This can be through the design and construction of the earthquake -resistant buildings or the evacuation of the population when the earthquakes begin.
