The next community forum discusses lessons from the December earthquake and tsunami warning Humoult now

Local experts now meet to think about this event, discuss the risks of the regional earthquake and tantami, and explore ways to enhance the flexibility of society.

A public forum, “evening discussion on local earthquake and tsunami risks” will be held on Wednesday, 12 March from 5:30 to 7 pm at the Judwin Forum (NHe 102) in Cal Polly Humoult. The hybrid event will be hosted personally and broadcast directly via Zoom for remote participants. Registration will also be available for those who register.

The presentation and discussion will display a committee of Cal Poly Humboldt, National Weather Service, the Redwood Coast Tsunami work group, and a geological survey in California. Topics include the cause of earthquakes frequently in our area, the effectiveness of the earthquake warning and tsunami systems, and lessons learned from the December 5 event to prepare better for future seismic events.

“This event is an opportunity for our society to understand the seismic risks that we face better and how we can respond more effectively,” says Melanie Michelk, head of the Geology Department.

Michelk explains that the general participation in the discussion is important. Quoting fear, confusion and distorted traffic after a Tsunami warning on December 5, the goal of the forum is to explain how these systems work to alert the population; Reporting and empowering members of society; Improving future responses.
