NEW DELHI: A 5.5-magnitude earthquake struck central Bangladesh on Friday, killing at least six people and injuring several others, the Associated Press reported, citing officials. The earthquake, which shook buildings in Dhaka and caused residents to flee abroad, was felt in several parts of the country and in neighboring regions of India, including Kolkata. Dhaka-based DBC TV reported that six people died in the capital, including three who were killed when a roof and wall collapsed, and three bystanders who were injured when the building's barriers fell. Authorities said the tremors caused major panic in Dhaka, one of the most densely populated cities in the world with a population of more than 30,000 people per square kilometre. The central region of Bangladesh is usually less seismically active than the north and southeast, where interactions between the Indian and Eurasian plates make earthquakes more common. A separate update from ANI said a 5.5 magnitude earthquake near Narsindi was widely felt across Dhaka around 10:40 am as well as in parts of India including West Bengal and northeastern regions. The USGS recorded the event at 10:08 a.m. EDT. According to the ANI report, “There have been no reports of injuries or damage so far,” although subsequent official updates confirmed deaths in the capital. Last month, Bangladesh recorded a 3.4-magnitude earthquake, according to the National Center for Seismology. Experts point out that shallow earthquakes can produce stronger surface vibrations because seismic waves travel a shorter distance. Citing USGS figures, the Daily Star reported that a magnitude 4.0 earthquake releases energy equivalent to about 6 tons of TNT, while a magnitude 5.0 earthquake equates to about 200 tons. The energy rises sharply with each force, with a magnitude 7.0 earthquake equivalent to approximately 199,000 tons of TNT and a magnitude 9.0 earthquake releasing about 99 million tons, the equivalent of about 25,000 nuclear bombs. Bangladesh lies at the intersection of the Indian, Eurasian and Burma plates, which move several centimeters every year. The country is criss-crossed by major faults including the Bogura, Tripura, Shillong Plateau, Dhoki and Assam faults, placing it among the 13 earthquake-prone zones. Areas like Chattogram, Chattogram Hill District and Jaintiapur in Sylhet fall into the most vulnerable category.
