The US Geological Survey says a swarm of small earthquakes is shaking the Bay Area on Monday

We're just starting to see this morning, some earthquakes in San Ramon with the largest being a 923.7 and by my count, about 16 earthquakes, overnight and into today. This is actually a very common behavior in this area near San Ramon. We've seen swarms near there in 2002, 2003, 2015, 2018 and now in 2025 we're seeing another swarm. Again, that area is the same type of large-scale movement. The Earth is trying to move in this direction. And sometimes we see these small earthquakes appear in this area. We think there are some small faults or even some fluid coming from below that is causing these small earthquakes. We've seen this type of swarm before. This looks like a very typical swarm, and we will be monitoring the pattern it continues over the next few days. We see these big earthquakes often, so we know they're going to happen and that they're all part of the same system, but exactly where and when they happen is really random. Well, these particular earthquakes in Japan and in Alaska and the swarm in San Ramon are relatively unrelated. Well, and the San Ramon squadron in particular, that's 3s power. It's kind of business as usual in this little part of the fall and Bay Area. There's always a chance, there's always a possibility that we could see a larger earthquake in the Bay Area, but this storm doesn't change those odds very much right now. *** The largest earthquake, 923.7, was felt by a few people, especially those who were there. *** Two people felt the other smaller quakes and *** a little further away. But more often than not, these things are localized and you'll feel them. As such, if this storm continues for a few more days, people in that San Ramon area may fear more earthquakes. This may be alarming, but we think it's pretty typical behavior. However, we know that earthquakes happen, and we understand that they will likely occur along the Ring of Fire, but exactly where and when and how big they will be, we can't really say. So, you know, they're all somewhat related because they're all part of these specific tectonic plates that are moving. But there, they're all completely unrelated to how they happen, and so none of them really relate to or excite each other.

A cluster of small earthquakes struck south of San Ramon on Monday, according to the USGS. About 16 earthquakes were recorded overnight and into Monday, USGS researcher Anne Marie Baltay told KCRA 3. The strongest quake was a magnitude 3.7 and struck at 9:07 a.m. about 2.3 miles southeast of San Ramon. Mild tremor was reported in the area, according to a USGS community map. Other earthquakes that appeared on the USGS map included: Magnitude -2.9 at 2:33 a.m. Magnitude -3.0 at 5:21 a.m. Magnitude -2.7 at 5:37 a.m. Magnitude -2.5 at 7:24 a.m. Magnitude -2.6 at 9:05 a.m. Magnitude -2.9 at 10:06 a.m. Magnitude -2.9 at 1:50 p.m. Baltai described the magnitude 2.6 quakes as “behavioral “Really common” for a region that saw similar swarms occur in 2002, 2003, 2015 and 2018. She said scientists believe there are some small fault structures “or even some fluids coming out from below” that cause the earthquakes. “This appears to be a very typical swarm. We will be monitoring the pattern for how it continues over the next few days,” she said. Baltay said the area is part of the Ring of Fire where the Pacific plate meets the surrounding tectonic plates. But she said the San Ramon swarm and recent strong earthquakes off Alaska and Japan are “relatively unrelated.” “There's always the possibility that we could see a larger earthquake in the Bay Area, but this swarm doesn't change those possibilities significantly at this time,” she said. A group of small earthquakes struck south of San Ramon on Monday, according to the USGS.

About 16 earthquakes were recorded overnight and into Monday, USGS researcher Anne Marie Baltay told KCRA Channel 3.

“This appears to be a very typical swarm. We will be monitoring the pattern for how it continues over the next few days,” she said.

Baltay said the area is part of the Ring of Fire where the Pacific plate meets the surrounding tectonic plates. But she said the San Ramon swarm and recent strong earthquakes off Alaska and Japan are “relatively unrelated.”
