An earthquake struck the Forlì area on Tuesday, January 13, sending terrified locals out into the streets in fear. A 4.3-magnitude tremor was felt at around 9.30 am local time (8.30 am GMT) in the province of Forlì Cesena, according to the National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology (INGV).

This was followed a few minutes later by an aftershock in the Ravenna area with a magnitude of 4.1. Both events reportedly lasted four or five seconds and were felt by residents in the affected areas as their homes shook. It also caused travel disruption, as trains were suspended amid technical checks in the Romania region.

The Bologna-Rimini, Ferrara-Rimini, Castelbologna-Ravenna and Faenza-Rafina lines were affected.

Schools and offices were evacuated as a precaution, while some people fled their homes into the streets until the earthquakes subsided. There have been no reports so far of damage or injuries.

Valentina Bali, mayor of the Rossi municipality in Ravenna, confirmed that evacuation orders had been issued and urged local residents to remain calm.

“We were at the epicenter of the earthquake which was felt around 9.27 am. There was no damage in the area. Evacuations were carried out in an organized manner,” she wrote on Facebook.

He added: “We are assessing the development of the situation. Obviously, I will update you if necessary. At this time, despite the fear, it is necessary to remain calm.”
