At least 90 people have been killed in an explosion at a coal mine in northern China, according to state media. The gas explosion at the Liushenyu Coal Mine in Shanxi Province is China’s worst mining disaster since 2009. There were 247 workers on duty when the explosion occurred at 19:29 (2229 GMT) on Friday, pulling more than 100 people to safety and dispatching hundreds of rescuers. Chinese President Xi Jinping called for no effort to treat the injured and rescue survivors, and called on the government to investigate the cause of the explosion and hold those responsible accountable.
