Kathmandu (Reuters) – Climbers dealing with Everest are twice as likely to reach the summit and be slightly less likely to die than they were two decades ago despite a sharp increase in congestion in the so-called “death zone”, according to a study published on Wednesday.

Between 2006 and 2019, about two-thirds of climbers have succeeded in their attempt to reach the summit, compared to nearly a third in the previous 15 years, according to a study by the University of Washington and the University of California at Davis.

The study said the risk of dying on the mountain was 0.5 percent for women and 1.1 percent for men, down from 1.9 percent and 1.7 percent in 1990-2005.

The number of summit attempts has risen over the decades, quadrupling crowding. In 2019, 955 people attempted to reach the summit, up from 222 in 2000. The study showed that on one day in May 2019, 396 climbers gathered on the narrow pathway below the summit – known as the “death zone”.

Nine climbers died on Mount Everest in May last year, making it the bloodiest season since the 2015 earthquake that killed at least 18 people at base camp.

A picture has spread of climbers waiting their turn to ascend and descend from the summit at the narrow single-rope pathway, although officials say the crowds were not the main cause of the deaths.

The study summary stated that “the surprising congestion has no clear effect on success or death during the summit envelopes.”

However, it still exposed climbers to more danger.

“If crowding slows climbers (as expected), this increases their exposure to the elements, increasing the risk of an accident or disease,” said lead author Raymond P. Huey.

“Moreover, an unexpected storm, earthquake or avalanche could be catastrophic on a busy road,” Huey told Reuters by email.

The climbers expressed concern that Nepal was issuing permits to anyone wishing to pay a fee of $ 11,000. Nepal plans to change climbing rules and make guides, fitness and experience in climbing a low mountain mandatory for Everest to raise safety levels, said Mira Acharya, an official with Nepal’s Ministry of Tourism.

Nepal has opened its mountains for climbing after being closed due to the coronavirus pandemic, but Acharya said mountaineering is uncertain as international and domestic trips have not yet resumed.

Mount Everest has been climbed by more than 6,000 climbers since Edmund Hillary and Sherpa Tenzing Norgay first climbed it in 1953. At least 311 people have died.
