Rorky: The Indian Institute of Technology Rorky (IIT-R) created the institute chair professor in honor of its alumni and the late Dean of Seismic Engineering Professor Anand Swaroop Arya on the occasion of the first anniversary of his death on Tuesday. Institute officials said the chair is the result of a generous donation of Rs 1.5 crore pledged by his wife Mrs. Koshalia Devi Arya and his children so that Dr. Arya’s professional contributions continue to inspire future generations. “Professor AS Arya was truly a legend who led earthquake engineering and disaster management efforts throughout his life. IIT Roorkee is very proud of his contributions, both as a graduate and as a faculty member. IIT Roorkee is deeply indebted to Mrs. Kaushalya Devi Arya and her children for the generous donation to make this professorship a reality,” he said AK Chaturvedi, Director of IIT-R. Dr. Arya was born on the 13th of June 1931 in the village of Ambihata in Saharanpur district in Uttar Pradesh. After his early education, he enrolled at Roorkee University (now IIT Roorkee) and obtained BE (Civil Engineering) in 1953 and ME (Structural Engineering) in 1954; He joined the university as a faculty, and then moved to the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign, USA in 1959, where he obtained his Ph.D. in 1961. After obtaining his doctorate, Dr. Arya returned to his university. He was instrumental in establishing an interdisciplinary department of earthquake engineering. Promoted to the chair of the seismological engineering department in 1971, he became vice president of the university in 1988 and continued in service after his retirement in 1989 as an honorary professor.
