SLC launches Open Street to increase traffic downtown

Salt Lake City, Utah – Dozens of people gathered in downtown Salt Lake City Thursday night to start the City’s Open Streets program – an initiative aimed at boosting foot traffic at local restaurants and businesses.

The program will close the main street to vehicle traffic between 300 South and 400 South every Thursday, Friday and Saturday from 6 pm to 10 pm

“There is a strong and comprehensive need to re-imagine public space and create socially distant ways to navigate Salt Lake City in the long term,” Peter McCowski, Acting Director of Business Development for the Department of Economic Development in Salt Lake City, said in a statement.

As part of the program, local restaurants and bars will expand outdoor dining onto the streets. The street will also be closed to dancers and hikers during dinner.

The project is part of a long-standing effort between the Downtown Salt Lake City Alliance and SLC Mayor Erin Mendenhall to create opportunities for Utah to congregate in a safe manner.

“Downtown Salt Lake City is the heart and soul of Utah and has faced enormous challenges this year through pandemic, earthquake, windstorm and more,” Mindenhall said. “I am excited to welcome the ‘Open Streets’ to Main Street and I hope residents from all over the state will join us in Downtown as we safely begin to revitalize the vibrant and culturally diverse heart of the city.”

It comes after Salt Lake City and the Utah Alcohol Control Administration relaxed guidelines on outdoor dining during the summer to help local businesses that have been struggling amid the COVID-19 pandemic.

Public health guidelines – such as social distancing and wearing face masks – will still apply. Businesses and restaurants will also be required to follow frequent disinfection and other safety measures.

“Projects like this are a great way to start a conversation about who the streets are and why,” said Peter Makovsky.

The Open Streets will take place every weekend until October 10.
