The owner and principal of a private Mexico City school that killed 26 people during the 7.1 earthquake in 2017 was convicted of manslaughter.

After 10 hours of court proceedings yesterday, judges declared Monica García Villegas, the former owner of Enrique Repsamen School, guilty of manslaughter in the deaths of 19 children and seven adults during the September 19 earthquake.

Shortly after the school collapsed, authorities filed a criminal complaint against Garcia, claiming that she was negligent in building an apartment for her personal use on the roof of a wing of the building.

But after her arrest warrant was issued in 2017, Garcia went into hiding and issued a red notice from Interpol to law enforcement around the world to help with her arrest.

She was detained in a Mexico City restaurant in May 2019 after her brother alerted authorities to her location and took a bounty of 5 million pesos.

The trial of the female students named “Miss Monica” began on August 12 in Mexico City’s Supreme Court.

According to a statement issued by the Public Prosecutor, the evidence in the case “was crucial to establish that the woman was negligent through failure to comply with the provisions stipulated in the building regulations and the Urban Development Law,” which puts school students and faculty at risk.
