Suga visits Fukushima Prefecture | NHK WORLD-JAPAN News

Japanese Prime Minister Suga Yoshihide has pledged that the government will do its utmost to support the recovery of areas severely affected by the 2011 earthquake and tsunami.

Suga visited Fukushima Prefecture on Saturday to inspect the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant and other sites. This was his first regional visit since taking office.

Suga arrived at Okuma, which is co-hosting the nuclear facility, shortly after 11 am

After touring the building on a bus, drive down to a site overlooking Reactors # 1 to # 4, and inspect the ongoing decommissioning work.

The Japanese government is studying ways to dispose of radioactive wastewater that has accumulated at the plant.

Much of the accumulated water was used to cool the molten nuclear fuel from the accident. Most of the radioactive materials present in that water have been removed before being stored in tanks. But the treated water still contains tritium and some other radioactive materials.

Suga kept a container with treated water inside while the plant operator official, Tokyo Electric Power Company, showed him.

He said the shutdown would take a long time to complete and requested that it be safely and consistently executed. He also pledged that the government would do everything it could to support the work.

After completing his tour, Suga told reporters that he had chosen Fukushima Prefecture as the destination for his first regional visit since taking office.

He said he confirmed that the shutdown work at the Fukushima Daiichi Station was progressing safely and steadily.

He pledged that the government would make every effort to help restore disaster areas and decommission the nuclear facility.

With regard to wastewater, the Prime Minister said that the government intends to make a decision as soon as possible on how to dispose of it.

Suga also indicated municipalities near the factory that have been designated as no-go areas. He pledged to work hard to lift the eviction orders and eventually return to their homes.
