What will Greater Christchurch look like in 2050?

Do we want Greater Christchurch to be known as New Zealand’s innovation hub?

Should Greater Christchurch aim to achieve a population of 1 million, focus on the future as a family-friendly hub known for its bike lanes, light rail and sustainability, or strive to become a high-tech hub for innovation?

A large survey of residents in Christchurch, Silwin and Wimacareery was launched today as part of a month-long process aimed at understanding what people in the area value most and what they would like it to look like in 30 years.

The Big Christchurch 2050 Poll will ask locals to consider infrastructure, jobs, well-being and climate change. Should new homes be concentrated within the existing urban boundaries or built on cheaper locations? Were jobs in tourism the future or technology?

Questions like these will form part of the month-long feedback process managed by a partnership between the Christchurch city councils, the Weymacarry district, the Sloane district and the environment of Canterbury.

Throughout October, councils will hear the public through an online survey that can be found at Greaterchristchurch.org.nz as well as through a variety of community forums, said Kathryn Snook, Great Christchurch 2050 Project Leader.

Questions will include:

What should we be known on the world stage? How do we improve our natural environment? What do we need to do to respond to sea level rise and extreme climate? Can we become the innovation hub in New Zealand? How do we tackle inequality? How can our heritage help us adapt to the future?

Then in November and December, there will be workshops with specific groups, including youth, IUI, and businesses among others.

Snook said the final plan was expected by June next year.

Don Baxendale, chief executive of Christchurch: A new roadmap is needed as a lot has changed with the earthquake recovery.

Christchurch City Council CEO Don Baxendale said it has been 13 years since the Greater Christchurch Partnership wrote its first roadmap, the 2007 Urban Development Strategy and Action Plan.

Since then, the Christchurch area has gone through all the changes in its earthquake recovery.

Baxindale said the new plan, Christchurch 2050, needs to be more ambitious about climate change and mana when.

The area needed a broad vision of the future of the city and surrounding towns and a clear idea of what needed to be done to get there.

“what did you do [2050] Look, smell like, taste like, to our children and grandchildren? Baxindale asked.

The development of a vision for 2050 is long overdue, says Joanna Norris, Chief Executive Officer of Christchurch, New Zealand.

Joanna Norris, ChristchurchNZ CEO, said the work required to develop the 2050 plan is too late.

“What we have needed for many years is a high-level strategic framework agreed upon across the sub-region.

“We agreed on the concepts. We had strong phrases. But there are no actual numbers behind that.”

Norris said that adhering to specific measures that will meet the public’s goals for well-being and sustainability would be a huge win for the Christchurch area.

Rolliston has grown rapidly since the earthquakes. Should it keep growing?

Sam Bruton, the mayor of Sloane County, said the GC2050 should help settle questions such as whether there should be a mass transit link between Rolleston and Christchurch, and whether valuable soil on the urban fringes of the city should be protected.

“It’s about ensuring the place those who live here want to see it now, and it can be turned over,” Bruton said.
