Tremors are just ground ‘stress relief’

CAPE TOWN – Many Cape Town residents were stressed after the third tremor in several months struck in the early hours of Tuesday, but according to a professor at Stellenbosch University, the tremors are nothing but a relief of pressure on the ground.

But according to the Environment Institute of Southern African Faith Communities and the Koeberg Alert Alliance (KAA), the increase in seismic activity at the Milnerton fault line should be a major cause of concern about the risks to the Koeberg Nuclear Power Plant.

KAA’s Peter Baker said, “Last month, we raised our concerns when Eskom defeated the first two earthquakes. Now there is a third and much more intense earthquake, South Africa should be aware of the risks associated with an old nuclear plant.”
