Turkey begins building new homes for the 2019 Albania earthquake victims

The groundbreaking ceremony was held on Wednesday to build 522 housing units by the Turkish Housing Development Administration (TOKI) in the Albanian town of Lak. Housing will be allocated to people who lost their homes in two earthquakes in September and November 2019.

“They will be a new symbol of Turkish-Albanian friendship,” President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said via a video link to the ceremony in Albania, which was attended by Minister of Environment and Urban Development Murat Corum and Albanian Prime Minister Edi Rama.

The project, which will cost around 42 million euros ($ 51 million), includes 37 commercial units and parking garages for 375 cars.

Fifty-one people were killed and more than 900 injured in a magnitude 6.3 earthquake in November 2019. It was preceded by a less powerful earthquake in September. The town of Lak was among the most affected areas, with most of its houses severely damaged.
