A 7.0 magnitude earthquake strikes off Antarctica

A powerful 7.0 magnitude earthquake struck the Southern Ocean near Antarctica on Saturday, prompting a tsunami warning in virtually unpopulated areas. Serious damage or injury is not expected.

The epicenter of the earthquake, which struck 2337 UTC on Saturday, was in the Southern Ocean near Elephant Island, a mountainous island in the outer reaches of the South Shetland Islands.

The United States Geological Survey (USGS) said the quake had a magnitude of 7.0, down from the previous estimate of 7.3. It hit about 8 kilometers (5 miles) below the ocean floor, making it a very shallow earthquake.

“Earthquakes of this magnitude are known to cause dangerous tsunami waves on beaches near the source,” the National Tsunami Warning Center said in a statement. She said that there is no threat of tsunami to the United States

However, the Chilean government issued a tsunami warning in Chilean Antarctica. This area is almost uninhabited, except for a small town and research station called Villa Las Estrellas.

Islands near the epicenter of Saturday’s earthquake, such as Elephant Island, King George Island and Clarence, do not have permanent residents but are home to a number of research stations.
