23:09 PM | By: EARTHQUAKEMONITOR A 4.7-magnitude earthquake struck central Mongolia last night, March 23, 2021, at 10:46 pm local time. The earthquake struck at a depth of 10 km shallow, and about 160 km south of Ulaanbaatar, capital of Mongolia.

Our monitoring service has received numerous user reports describing mild to moderate vibration. Most of these were reported from the capital. Based on all available data, the earthquake was felt within a radius of 350 km from the epicenter. Many people also reported that they felt their bed or sofa flicker. The earthquake louded as the devices hung. However, there were no immediate reports of significant damage.

This earthquake was unusual because it did not occur on any faults or known volcanoes in the country. The epicenter plotted approximately 400 to 500 km north of the Main Mongolian Line. Usually most of the tectonic activities in the country focus on the northern and western regions. The last strong earthquake to hit the country occurred early this year. It hit 6.8 degrees below Lake Khovsgol in northern Mongolia, near the Russian-Mongolian border.
