3.9 earthquake strikes near Mount Hood, felt by locals

A 3.9-magnitude earthquake struck near the government camp on Saturday, strong enough that servers in Charlie Mountain View reported feeling the ground tremble, if only slightly.

The earthquake occurred less than four miles from the government’s northeastern camp, shortly after 8:50 p.m.

Andy Diaz said he was preparing his guard for Charlie when he felt something vibrate. He looked at the money in his hands and saw a colleague shoot the milkshake machine in the restaurant. Diaz, 23, thought it was settled—the machine must have gone wrong.

Another co-worker, Valerie Turgerson, was taking beer orders for a table of six when she heard the screeching wood of the building as it does during a strong wind. But there was no wind. No one seemed to notice anything strange, and customers were still placing their orders for her.

“Then I kind of thought, maybe this was all in my head?” About half an hour after the quake, Tergerson said.

Within minutes, the news spread. A table with some of Tergerson’s regular customers said they also felt a jolt, and another co-worker named Diaz on the phone to say the same.

“He confirmed that I’m not crazy,” Diaz said of his friend.

Only five earthquakes of magnitude 2.5 have hit Oregon so far this year. The 3.9 earthquake was the strongest in Lot.

Saturday’s earthquake wasn’t the only one in the neighborhood that night, as two quakes of 2.3 and 2.1 magnitude struck near the government camp at 8:55 p.m. and 9:14 p.m., respectively.
