Tasmanian police said there was one report of a strong bang from Wynyard around 2am.

“It is believed to be a meteorite and a four-second explosion is believed to have occurred from Burnie Road,” a Tasmanian police spokesman said.

“Burney’s units didn’t find anything.”

The Australian Space Agency has been contacted.

Geoscience Australia confirmed there was no earthquake activity in Tasmania early Saturday morning.
