William Ellsworth received the highest honor in seismology

William Ellsworth, professor of geophysics at Stanford Earth University, received the Harry Fielding Reed Medal, the highest honor of the American Seismological Society.

Ellsworth has been recognized for his critical contributions to earthquake site, earthquake nucleation, earthquake frequency and induced seismic research.

With Felix Waldhauser, Ellsworth developed the Double Difference (DD) earthquake location method, which has influenced the field of seismology since the primary study was published in the Bulletin of the American Seismological Society in 2000. Other notable research by Ellsworth includes his work on earthquake sequences and possible nucleation stages of earthquakes, and more recently a body of work on the causes and consequences of induced earthquakes. He is co-director of the Stanford Center for Induced and Stimulated Seismicity.

His work on understanding the causes and solutions of induced earthquakes testifies to his scientific creativity, productivity and outstanding direction, according to geophysicist Mark Zubak, who nominated Ellsworth for the award.

Ellsworth began his career at the USGS in 1971. He was Chief of the USGS Seismology Branch from 1982 to 1988 and Chief Scientist for the USGS Earthquake Risk Team from 2002 to 2005. During his career at USGS and Stanford, Ellsworth has served on numerous review and advisory committees, including his current position as chair of the USGS’ External Seismic Early Warning Working Group.

Among his many awards, Ellsworth is a past president of the American Seismological Society, a Fellow of the American Geophysical Union and a recipient of the Department of the Interior’s Distinguished Service Award.
