Tarantula venom may produce drugs that help control opioid epidemics
Researchers at the University of California, Davis are trying to use poisons from tarantulas to develop painkillers that help control the opioid epidemic. Report CBS Sacramento..
“Nature provides such a wide variety of proteins that it is basically a component of future medicines,” says Dr. Vladimir Yarov Yarovoi of the University of California, Davis. He is one of the principal investigators in a team of 20 people.
What they do is reprogram a toxic protein called a peptide from a terrifying hairy spider and turn it into a painkiller.
“We have redesigned the peptide to be more selective for specific receptors in the nervous system that are heavily involved in pain signals,” says Yarov-Yarovoy.
“We really hope it will be a game changer,” Phuong Nguyen, a member of the research team, told the station.
For some team members, it was easy to pursue this approach as a way to help them reach out. Opioid epidemic..
“For us, it’s cool-it’s really cool-because we’re probably the few people doing it,” Nguyen said.
The team is using a program called Rosetta and a microscope to look at various computer-generated models to find out how to turn proteins into new drugs.
So far, the results are as spectacular as the spiders they are testing.
“It’s already as powerful as morphine, but it shows a promise that there are no opioid side effects,” Yarov-Yarovoy said.
This part of the National Institutes of Health initiative can take at least five years for new medicines to reach the shelves.
“All these steps, all these years, are worth creating a new, safe pain remedy,” says Yarov-Yarovoy.
The University of California, Davis said that this is not the only new painkiller created here.
In 2020, the FDA gave rapid designation to non-narcotics developed by another professor for humans and companion animals.
