Provincetown COVID-19 cluster is approaching 900, but may be slow
The COVID-19 cluster in Provincetown may be slowing down.
According to town manager Alex Morse, the number of cases has reached 882 as of today, but the daily increase has been minimal since the town began reporting the number.
The overall count of cases includes not only those who are ill today, but also those who have already been released from isolation and recovered from the illness.
Seven people were hospitalized, including five in Massachusetts and two outside the state.
No deaths have been reported, Morse said in an update posted today on his Facebook page.
Public health officials in Morse and Barnstable counties have pointed out that test positive rates are declining.
“Testing is the best way for health authorities to measure the success of the measures being taken to reduce the effects of clusters and the spread of the virus,” he said in a post.
The percentage of positive COVID-19 tests in the cluster peaked at 15% on July 15 and then dropped to a low of 5.9% on July 27, in a nearly stable pattern. It was 6.8% yesterday.
Of the 882 cases related to Provincetown since July 4, 531 are residents of Massachusetts, 220 of whom live in Provincetown.
Almost three-quarters (74%) are so-called breakthrough cases of people already vaccinated with COVID-19.
As of today, 87% of those affected by the outbreak are men, down from 93% in mid-July. The median age has risen from 35 to 40 earlier this month.
