Google recognizes biologist Kamal Ranadive with graffiti
Kamallanadib, an Indian biologist and winner of the Padma Boushan Award, was featured on Google Doodle on November 8, 2021 on his 104th birthday.
A graffiti by guest artist Ibrahim Rayintakath shows Dr. Ranadive in a lab equipped with a microscope and test tubes. “I wanted to create a work that looks lively and fits Kamal’s personality. The first idea was to bring this out and at the same time emphasize her area of work,” said Reintakato.
Dr. Lanadiv was born in Pune in 1917 as Kamal Samaras. After graduating from medicine, she pursued biology and received a doctorate in cytology, studying cells, while working as a researcher at the Indian Cancer Research Center (ICRC).
After a short work at Johns Hopkins University, Dr. Lanadiv founded the country’s first tissue culture laboratory at the ICRC.
As a director of the ICRC and a pioneer in animal modeling of cancer development, Ranadive was one of the first researchers in India to propose a genetic link between breast cancer and identify a link between cancer and a particular virus. ..
Continuing this pioneering study, Dr. Lanadiv helped develop a vaccine by studying the bacterium Mycobacterium leprae, the causative agent of leprosy. In 1973, Dr. Lanadiv and 11 colleagues founded the Association of Women Scientists of India (IWSA) to support women in the field of science.
She has published over 200 scientific research papers on cancer and leprosy.
After retirement, she worked in rural areas of Maharashtra, training women as health care workers and providing health and nutrition education.
She was awarded Padma Bhushan in medicine in 1982. Dr. Lanadiv died on April 11, 2001.
