COVID-19 Regional counties in the midst of a surge in cases | Local news
Driven by Mankato — Omicron variants, this week’s 72% surge in new COVID-19 cases has become one of the highest weekly sums in south-central Minnesota since the pandemic began.
Nine regional counties, including 1,718 newly identified cases between January 8 and 14, increased from 1,001 in the previous week.
In Blue Earth and Nicollet counties, the number of cases increased by 62% and 70%, and in all counties the total number of cases increased by at least 47%.
Spikes are consistent with the trends seen in other regions where Omicron spreads rapidly. Omicron caused a sharp rise in the case and then declined relatively rapidly.
A 72% surge compared to the 54% increase last week indicates that the number of cases is still accelerating in the region. The small growth rate next week is a positive sign that the waves may be in recession.
As cases accelerate, community and state residents continue to die of COVID-19. Unvaccinated residents have a very imbalanced rate of hospitalization and death. The latest deaths in the South Central region were confirmed on Friday in Le Sueur County residents aged 55-59 years.
That person was among 32 confirmed COVID-19 deaths across the state on Friday. The number of deaths from a pandemic in Minnesota has increased to 10,971.
Pandemic deaths in south-central Minnesota have increased to 439. January accounts for 20 confirmed deaths from COVID-19 so far.
