As the warm season enters, much of the activity begins to move outdoors. COVID’s recommendations are outdoors, but there are other things to consider when packing picnic baskets. The risk of human infection from tick bites is greatest in the late spring and summer months. Mites can carry several microbes that can cause illnesses such as Lyme disease, ericosis, and Rocky Mountain spotted fever. In 2019, 296 cases of Lyme disease were reported in Iowa.
Ticks are usually found near the ground in bush and wooded areas. The scale does not fly or jump. They are commonly found in tall grass and shrubs and climb to people when brushed. When a mite attaches to a person, it finds a part of the skin and attaches. There are a few simple ways you can prevent tick bites, such as avoiding wooded or lawn areas.
If you plan to spend time in these areas:
• Walk in the center of the trail.
• Avoid brushed areas that are overgrown with grass and leaf debris.
• Check ticks after activity in the tick area.
• Shower immediately after entering from outside.
• Use repellents containing 20% or more of diet, picaridine, or IR3535 on exposed skin for protection that lasts several hours. Always follow the product instructions. Parents should avoid the hands, eyes and mouth and apply the product to their children.
• Use products that contain permethrin in your clothing. This product contains 0.5% permethrin and handles clothing and gear such as boots, pants, socks and tents. It is protected even if it is washed several times. Pre-treated clothes are available and can be protected for longer.

If you find a tick on your body, remove it immediately. Folk remedies, such as burning ticks in a match or covering with vaseline or nail polish, are ineffective. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommend the following steps for combating ticks:
• Carefully grab the mite with tweezers and grab it at the mouth, close to the skin. Do not squeeze the tick body.
• Steadily pull directly off the skin. Don’t worry if your mouth breaks in the process, as the main purpose is to remove the tick body.
• Clean the wound and disinfect the bite area.
If you develop a rash or fever within a few weeks after removing the mites, see a doctor. Not all people with Lyme disease show the same symptoms, but the earliest and earliest sign of infection is a rash that can usually appear on the spot of a tick within a few days to a month. The rash initially looks like a small red bump, then red in the center, surrounded by a red ring around the clear area, and grows until it looks like a bull.
