Savannah, Georgia (Gray News)-According to the Georgia Department of Natural Resources, bird flu has been detected in white-headed eagle in Georgia, affecting its nesting.
recently ReportDNR officials said samples of three bald eagles that died in the Chatham, Grin, and Liberty counties returned positive for bird flu or bird flu.
The agency also reported that bird flu may have been less successful in nesting eagles in Georgia’s coastal counties.
Officials said about one-third of Georgia’s eagle nests are in coastal counties. Annual aerial surveys of bald eagle nesting reveal more failed nests than expected, and nest success rates are now down by about 30%.
Overall, Georgia has a large population of bald eagles, and the agency reports that initial findings of nesting eagles outside the coastal areas are similar to the previous year.
