GPEI estimates that the polio vaccine has saved an estimated 20 million children worldwide from paralysis. When Rotary helped launch GPEI in 1988, the disease paralyzed more than 1,000 people worldwide each day, most of them infants. Since then, Rotary and its partners have reduced the number of polio cases by 99%, with only six polio cases caused by the wild poliovirus in 2021. Afghanistan and Pakistan are the only countries where wild poliovirus is endemic.
Advances in polio are the result of the efforts of countless volunteers and healthcare professionals to immunize children in difficult-to-reach areas and establish real-time global surveillance and outbreak response mechanisms. Polio eradication infrastructure has been used to perform important health interventions, including combating other infectious diseases and supporting COVID-19 prevention and vaccination efforts.
Decades of experience putting polio on the verge of eradication have allowed Rotary to emphasize the power and efficacy of the COVID-19 vaccine.
