Viruses May Be Catastrophic to Mental Health of Generation Blockade – Charity
Children’s charity studies suggest that more than one-third of children and adolescents experience mental health problems during the coronavirus blockade.
Barnardo warns that the impact of Covid-19 could be “catastrophic” to the well-being of “generational blockade” without urgent early intervention.
An online YouGov poll on charity from May 15th to June 2nd asked 4000 British children and adolescents aged 8 to 24 in the UK about their feelings during the lockdown.
More than one-third said they experienced increased mental health and health problems such as loneliness (41%), anxiety (38%), sadness (37%), and stress (34%).
A third say sleep problems can affect school work, behavior, and family life.
Over two-thirds of respondents (68%) say that not seeing their friends was one of the three most difficult things about lockdown.
More than half say they experience boredom (51%), anxiety (28%), and withdrawal (26%).
Barnardo CEO Javed Khan said:
“Our poll results show that one in three children is already experiencing mental health problems.
“The combination of lockdown and social isolation and the addition of other vulnerabilities can have catastrophic effects across generations.
“Internal abuses have risen sharply and poverty has increased: children are facing traumatic events that can affect their lives.
“Blacks, Asians, and ethnic minority (BAME) children are more likely to suffer from anxiety and lose their families.”
Barnardo’s also surveyed more than 1000 field staff in April, who said anxiety and sleep disorders were top 2 mental health problems for children and adolescents working with them.
Loneliness and loneliness are of prime concern to these children and adolescents.
More than two-thirds (69%) of Barnardo staff working directly with children and families say they help people with increasing mental health problems due to Covid-19 outbreaks ..
However, 35% of these staff members say they don’t have what they need to support vulnerable service users with mental health problems.
Charities are calling on the government to invest in programs to address the mental health of children and adolescents during their summer holidays, and in time to mitigate the effects of school closures.
Separately, we interviewed 113 service users aged 13 to 25, including caring children, carers, young caregivers, disabled people, refugees and victims of sexual abuse.
Charity said many of these young people were dependent on services before the lockdown, and have become more vulnerable and isolated since the outbreak.
It is worried that the blockade is already causing mental health problems for vulnerable children and adolescents, which are hidden from teachers and other adults due to lack of social contact.
The 20-year-old care giver told the charity: For many who stay within themselves, you feel trapped and trapped in your own thoughts. “
According to NHS Digital, 1 in 8 people aged 5 to 19 were in diagnosable mental health before the outbreak of the coronavirus.
It comes as more than 146 organizations, including Barnaldo, have called on the Prime Minister to put children as much as health and economic priority in the country’s coronavirus recovery plan.
Charities, teachers and frontline services say that children face “an unprecedented threat to childhood and life opportunities” and deserve an “unprecedented response.”
Boris Johnson is also called upon to protect the most vulnerable children and adolescents, including people with disabilities, mental health issues, abused children, and ethnic minorities.
Actions for children, a joint statement from organizations including the National Children’s Bureau and the NSPCC, states:
“It’s time for the country to have strong and protective arms around its children, to prevent the collapse of childhood and the diversion of life’s possibilities.”
A government spokesman said: “We recognize the importance of mental health and well-being in children and adolescents during an unprecedented coronavirus outbreak.
“To that end, we have published guidance for schools and families on how to support the mental health and education of children at home.
“Mental health support continues to be available to those in need. NHS services continue to be open and national and local mental health charities are available to assist adults and children affected by pandemics. Has funded £9.2 million.”
